For All

1. What is the National Smooth Dancers all about?

The National Smooth Dancers (NSD) is a non-profit social dance club fostering ballroom dancing. We are a California organization with 7 active chapters spanning from San Diego to San Francisco. Each chapter holds several dances, dance lessons, and other social events each month focused on the classic ballroom couple dances such as Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Rumba, Viennese Waltz, Samba, Quickstep, Bolero, East Coast Swing, and Cha-Cha. We also do other popular couple social dances such as Night Club Two-Step, Hustle, Bachatta, West Coast Swing, Merengue, and Salsa. Guests are always welcome at any event.

Twice a year, the entire NSD chapter family has a weekend get-together with dancing, professional lessons, intra-chapter dance competitions, show cases, skits, and wonderful social fun.

2. What is a typical dance like?

Most chapter dances are casual dress events with music provided by a DJ. Often there is a dance theme and attendees are encouraged to dance in theme appropriate attire (e.g. Green on St. Patrick's Day, Red on Valentine's Day).

The main dress requirement is leather or suede soled shoes designed for dancing. (Black rubber soled shoes can scuff up a floor and are not permitted.) Sneakers and rubber soled shoes are strongly discouraged as ballroom dancing involves turning and pivoting which require soles that permit turning and sliding on the floor.

There are special events at least annually and at the group conventions that are formal events where men are encouraged to wear Tuxedos and women wear formal evening gowns.

3. How is NSD different from other dance clubs?

A few of the salient differences are:
  • We love variety. Swing clubs mostly just dance Swing, Salsa clubs mostly dance Salsa, we dance them all.
  • Each club has the role of Queen who serves a one year term and every two months or so one chapter has a Coronation for their next Queen. The coronations are filled with ceremony, ornate dress, fine decoration, and are a great opportunity to visit, make friends, and participate with members of each chapter.
  • We are an extended family. Like college fraternities and sororities, you join one chapter at one campus and at the same time feel comfortable knowing you will be welcomed by any other chapter on any other college campus by your fraternity/sorority peers.
  • We don't care how well you dance, we just want you to participate, make friends, and have fun.

4. How do I attend a dance event?

Each chapter has it's own website. You can go to the Chapters link from the blue navigation bar and get a list of chapters and jump to their website to see their calendar with event brochures showing how to attend.

Additionally the global Event Calendar has a list of future events with extensive filtering so you can get a list by date, weekday, chapter, and type of dance and dance lesson.

Some chapters allow you to drop in, some want you to register on their website. Follow one of the two paths above and come join us.

5. How does membership work?

Each chapter manages their membership outreach and joining process, and most events are open to the public though prior registration is sometimes required.

Membership in an NSD chapter is a simple process where a person who has attended several dance events as a guest applies and is approved by the chapter. For more information, please contact us or see the contact details at the chapter near you..

6. Do I have to join NSD as a couple?

No. We have many single members who attend dances without a designated partner or bring one or more guests to dance with. Many chapters pay male Dance Hosts who are specifically tasked to dance with unaccompanied ladies to ensure everyone enjoys the dance.

For Members

1. How do I log in?

Each member and registered guest with a valid email address on record has a login and temporary password to enable them to log in to the website. If you do not remember getting and email or other notification of those details or have lost it, you can click on the Login link in the blue navigation bar and near the bottom left of the login screen you will find a button at the bottom left of the page labeled Forgot My Password. Follow the directions and a new password will be emailed to you with instructions on how to login and change it. (Please check your spam or junk folder if you do not receive it within 10 minutes.)

If you suspect we do not have your current/correct email (a fellow member can log in and confirm via the Who utility) or you did not get an email, please send an email to the webmaster by clicking on the Webmaster link at the bottom of any web page and/or fill out the feedback form and the webmaster will get your email updated so you can reset your password.

2. What if I need help?

If you get lost on the website or don't know what to do....
  1. Don't Panic.
  2. First, click on the colored logo in the upper left corner of any website page. This will bring you to your "home page" with a concise summary of links to the (few) most likely things you will need to be concerned about.
  3. Most web pages have a (tiny) line at the top of the page with a link to an Overview to give some perspective of what that part of the website does and how to use it.
  4. In any form that has two columns with the field attributes in the left (tan background) column and places to enter information in the right column, each attribute name in the left column is a link to a help function that will provide more information on what that attribute means and reasonable ranges to add for a value for it.
  5. You can fill out the feedback form to provide feedback or to ask specific questions. We will work hard to place answers to your questions that might have broader usage in our frequently asked questions.

Questions, feedback, or website issues; please let us know by filling out the feedback form or emailing Webmaster.
